Eric Phillips creates contemporary fine furniture, interiors and wooden watercraft. Based in Bennettsbridge, Co Kilkenny, Ireland, on the banks of the river Nore, he uses when possible, local naturally felled wood: spalted beech, Irish cedar, Irish ash, oak or larch to build contemporary fine furniture, wooden strip canoes, surfboards as well as commissioned in-built pieces.

Originally from Southern California, Eric grew up with a passion for surfing, working with wood and design. During a twenty-five year career in Paris, France, he developed a design and build company focused on interior architecture for domestic and commercial spaces, working on projects conceived independently and in collaboration with architects such as Didier Faustino, William Matthews and Renzo Piano.

On moving to Co Kilkenny in 2016, Eric has continued his business to the same high standards. He is currently developing projects inspired by the Irish landscape with local materials in the creation of beautiful hand crafted pieces that explore fluidity and function on and off the water.

wooden watercraft

This Canadian style cedar strip canoe is made from western red cedar. All the trimmings (gunnels, yolk, seat frames and decks) are made from locally sourced Irish ash. The caning for the seats is a synthetic cane, which stands up better over time against humidity and long periods of sitting while paddle through the waters of lakes, rivers and seas. I have slightly accentuated the rocker making it well adapted to talking out on open sea waters lessening water coming in over bow and stern.

Paddles

These handmade wooden paddles are a real pleasure to paddle with. I am presently creating and shaping two different models: The Beaver tail and The Otter tail. The Beaver tail has a wider blade. I would use this in deeper and still waters such as lakes or the sea. The Beaver tail moves a lot of water and requires a more controlled stroke in order to maintain a desired trajectory of you canoe. The Otter tail I use more frequently in rivers where quick change of direction is often required and the need to move more water is not necessary.
I use different woods to create my paddles. Featured in these photos are ash and cherry. I will sometimes integrate other woods such as walnut or sapele into the handle or blade. I treat all my paddles with a natural linseed oil finish, leaving the workshop with five coats. It is nice to maintain your paddle with a fresh coat whenever you feel. I will wipe on a fresh coat of oil after every second or third time in the water. It is said with linseed oil, “Once a day for a week, once a week for a month and once a month for a year.” Basically, the oil impregnates the wood and keeps its natural beauty while protecting it from the water.
I stamp all my paddles by heat branding my name onto them.
Pricing is €250 per paddle excepting for all walnut paddles which are €300. Delivery prices vary with quantity and location. PLEASE CONTACT FOR AVAILABILITY.
